Combining Mindset Coaching + Targeted Tutoring Case #1
Three candidates boost their study prep with a combination of mindset coaching and private tutor for curriculum.
Gerard is attempting Level II for the second time; hisfailing on his first attempt was a blow. To prepare for his first time at LevelII, he had taken a class which was unsatisfying and that he felt was timewasted as he did not understand a number of concepts and problems. He usedSchweser in addition to the class materials and had taken copious notes fromthat material, so he continued with the new edition for this second attempt.
As with all coaching we started Gerard with an assessment ofstrengths. Gerard scores reveal self-study is a challenge for him becausehighly gregarious people learn through connection with others. Also, theresults showed that he responds to stress by becoming anxious; we identifiedthat managing that anxiety would be profitable in both exam prep and especiallyon exam day. High anxiety will negatively impact both study prep and especiallyexam day.
His goals for the coaching program became accountability, creating a study plan that worked for his personality and schedule, and learn to manage anxiety.

While executing his study plan of reading the content, doing chapter quizzes, and keeping a list of the concepts he was not understanding, his list of problems not mastered became more and more specific.
When Gerard first spoke with our VIP Tutor who quickly identified how Gerard was working hard but not smart. Gerard had been trying to master every detail and was “beating up” the curriculum books on derivatives and fixed income. By getting weekly practice and review with his tutor, Gerard began to understand the concepts that concerned him, not memorize them. Gerard focused on applying what he learned with the VIP Tutor and the accumulation factor began to accelerate his understanding.
Gerard found the greatest value was in working one-on-one. The effect was like whittling down a pile of uncertainty. He reported a confident exam day and the post-exam anxiety is greatly diminished.
