So close, so often. This time HAVE to pass.
Three candidates boost their study prep with a combination of mindset coaching and a private tutor for curriculum.
Background of approach: Getting to PASSED
Kelly has an executive position at a leading regional trustcompany and is on his sixth attempt at Level II. In his previous attempt he gotvery close to a passing grade.
As with all coaching programs, we started with the assessment of motivations and strengths. The assessment revealed a high gregariousness and a low self-discipline score. His outgoing nature has led to success and advancement at work but presents obstacles for gaining the charter because it demands solitary time in self-study. His motivation was mostly personal (meaning he needed outside encouragement) as gaining his CFA credential was expected but not required by his employer. Lack of self-discipline was going to require vigilance; his current work demanded long days and sometimes weekends so taking the time to study meant working fewer hours.
Kelly’s assessment reveals that he is highly conscientious and likes to play with ideas. These measures are strong predictors of eventual success.

He tried to find a class to support his study but there were no resources through the local CFA society. He wanted to get support by having an accountability partner, an organized plan he could trust and execute, and weekly monitoring on how he was doing and what to do next. He found us in the middle of his prep cycle. We started working on his goals on March 4.
We set up a 13-week mindset and accountability program with regular hour-long sessions to monitor the study plan set up to complete all readings in CFA curriculum by end of April. During each session we compared what was done compared to what the goal was, and recalibrated what was left. It become clear that Kelly needed additional curriculum coaching.
Kelly started with VIP Tutoring later in May. When Kelly talked with the VIP Tutoring leader, he and his wife were expecting a baby the week before the exam, and was concerned about having enough time to review all the material he had ahead of himself. He was relieved to see that the review lessons did not consist of the whole of the material but his VIP Tutor would assess exactly what he needed to spend more time on. He had “seen that and done that before” and it did not work. Kelly found his VIP Tutor to be a partner in his own unique study path, not a one-size-fits-all instruction method or boot camp.
He found the the in-person sessions to target what he needed. Kelly’s end-of-chapter quizzes and mocks revealed a pattern of either 80-100 percent correct or very low scores in 20’s. He knew some topics very well others not at all. When he didn’t know an answer, he would become anxious and miss subsequent questions on topics he knew well.
By using mindset coaching to keep motivation and accountability high, Kelly augmented the CFA materials with tapes for variety and deeper comprehension.
